The Story Behind
The Tree Knot

I’m Tylor Mumby, the owner of The Tree Knot. What started as a few furniture flips on Facebook Marketplace slowly turned into a full-time woodshop focused on real wood box beams, mantels, shelving, ceiling accents, and custom architectural details.

The Tree Knot did not start in a perfect shop with expensive tools and a polished setup. It started in a portable carport tent during the early days of the pandemic. At the time, I was restoring and flipping furniture with whatever tools I could afford — basic sanders, entry-level tools, and a lot of late nights figuring things out as I went.

From there, I moved into a family member’s extra garage, and eventually into the woodshop I work out of today in West Michigan. Every step was built slowly, one project at a time.

In the beginning, a lot of my work came from Facebook Marketplace. One of the products that really helped me get started was pallet board furniture, especially pallet board headboards. I would build them with shelves and sconce lights so people had a place for books, décor, and lighting above the bed. They were simple, functional pieces, but they taught me a lot about working with wood, designing around real homes, and building something people were excited to use.

One of my first larger projects came from an out-of-state customer who found my woodworking listings on Facebook Marketplace and eventually made his way to my website. He had a large Chris-Craft boat located at a marina on Lake Michigan that needed work on the teak wood flooring and exterior teak trim. That project involved stripping thick layers of old varnish, sanding, cleaning, staining, and resealing the teak through multiple stages of clear varnish.

It was a major step up from the smaller furniture pieces I had been building, and it gave me a deeper appreciation for the process — the prep work, the patience, and the details that make finished woodwork last.

Over time, my focus started shifting. I still appreciated furniture, but I wanted to create products that felt more permanent and elevated. I was drawn to the kind of spaces you see in Pottery Barn, Magnolia Home, Crate & Barrel, and West Elm — rooms with character, texture, and architectural detail. One thing I kept noticing was how often those spaces used beams on the ceiling.

Different wood species, finishes, profiles, and layouts could completely change the feeling of a room. A plain ceiling could become a focal point. A basic living room could feel custom. A new build could gain the character it was missing.

​

That is what led me to box beams.

​

At the time, I did not see many companies in Michigan clearly offering real wood box beams as a product or service. I saw an opportunity to create something different — custom wood accents that gave homes a more finished, intentional look without feeling mass-produced.

​

Today, The Tree Knot focuses on real wood architectural details built by hand in West Michigan. That includes decorative box beams, mantels, shelving, tongue and groove accents, and custom woodwork designed around each space.

​

The goal has stayed the same from the beginning: build honest, well-made pieces with character, detail, and purpose.
